New Jack Swing Hall Of Fame:
Kwame
Loosely affiliated with fellow acts Salt’N’Pepa and Kid’N’Play through Hurby ‘Luv Bug’ Azor as his producer, Kwame (born Kwame Holland) remains one of the best examples of what the New Jack Swing Era was all about: style, innovation, a positive vibe, and good clean fun. Using a live band both in live performance and on his albums, Kwame’s visual package was equally engaging as his sound – he and his entourage were always wearing polka dots.
1990’s “Ownlee Ewe” is easily Kwame’s most recognize-able hit, although the “Oneovdabigboyz” single deserves an honorable mention. Future rap star and Hip-Hop mogul Sean “Puffy” Combs can be spotted as a dancer in one of Kwame’s videos.
Kwame was last seen on VH1's documentary, Hip Hop Babylon before re-inventing himself as a producer. Beginning circa 2005, Kwame's new nomme de guerre was K-1 Million, with production duties fulfilled for G-Unit and notably, the song "Switch" for fellow New Jack Era rapper Will Smith. Other artists that Kwame has worked with include pop artist Jesse McCartney, Fantasia Barrino (of American Idol fame), Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, and Dru Hill.
An interesting fact about Kwame is that one of his cousins is the actor Vin Diesel, who appeared as a dancer in some of his early videos. Growing up, Kwame was also family friends with music legend Stevie Wonder.
