NJS4E Hall of Fame: Black Sheep
April 8th, 2009

Editor's Note: Alveatta Ferebee, one of Njs4ever.com's newest writers will be taking the lead on completing this website's Hall of Fame section. The great thing about Alveatta is that she understands and has passion for the hip-hop side of things, which of course is stylistically one half of the equation of New Jack Swing - that is R&B+Hip-Hop. So without any further adieu, here's the first new Hall of Fame article --- BLACK SHEEP! A. Knyte

When you have "Brothers in the Jungle" and "Cousins on a Quest", you are destined to be one of Hip-hop's greatest. Or, one of the groundbreaking Hip-Hop groups of the 90's to create one of VH1's: Hiphop's 100 Greatest Songs.

You are also "Dres" and "Mr. Lawnge" (pronounced Long) of Black Sheep, members of the progressive Hiphop movement Native Tongues, comprised of the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.

In 1991, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing, Black Sheep's debut album would take its place among Hiphop's cult classics. Even, earning them a spot as the first Hiphop act to appear on The Tonight Show post Johnny Carson. The group even worked on Vanessa Williams' three times platinum album The Comfort Zone, recording the remix to "Work To Do," a remake of the Isley Brothers hit.  All of the singles released from the album held their own at top 10 on US Hip-Hop Dance charts but the critically acclaimed "The Choice Is Yours (Dis or Dat)" was the stuff of legends.

An anthem that cynically echoed the excessively used and now ridiculously clichéd phrase "keeping it real," posing the question of "what is real hip-hop?" Black Sheep put the decision in the hands of their fans and their fans made the decision to put their hands up and get down. And this cut, distinguished itself and Black Sheep from…well, let's just say the rest.

With the success of the album, Black Sheep was able to branch out into an independent label named One Love. Signing recording artists The Legion, the infamous Chi Ali, and Showbiz and A.G. of the Digging In The Crates Crew (D.I.T.C) that included Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Fat Joe, O.C, Buckwild, and the late Big L. Although the label would only release one album (Theme + Echo = Krill) from recording artists The Legion.

Their second album, Non-Fiction, fell victim to the sophomore jinx. The group disbanded yet continued recording as solo artists. In 1999, Dres released Sure Shot Redemption. A year later Black Sheep teamed up for the title track to movie Once In The Life. An adaptation of three-time Emmy Award winning actor Laurence Fishburne's play Riff Raff, in which he wrote and starred and Dres appeared. That same year the group released the Redlight/Greenlight EP. Shortly after, the group again parted ways but this time for good.

Dres was featured on Handsome Boy Modeling School's second album White People in 2004. Dan the Automator and Prince Paul (producer for De La Soul) of Handsome Boy Modeling School collaborated with Dres on the song "First…and Then."

In 2006, Black Sheep worked together for an online album 8WM/Novakane: Women With Women With Weed With Wine With Me, although Mr. Lawnge did work on the album this was not to be considered their return as a group.

In 2007, Dres appeared on Nas' Where Are They Now?

But no matter how this story ends, Black Sheep's contribution to Hiphop is irrefutable but then "I guess of course the choice is yours."

Flashback: Hi-Five performs "I Like The Way" - 1991
April 6th, 2009

The years 1990 and 1991 were peak years for New Jack Swing in the United States, and one legendary radio station in the San Francisco Bay area held its first two-day "Summer Jam" concert in August 1991. On "Summer Jam Sunday" of this sold-out event (to which over 20,000 attended each day), Jive recording artists Hi-Five graced the Shoreline Amphitheatre stage wearing jean jackets with their visages airbrushed on the back. Concert goers would come away from that performance saying that Hi-Five were easily one of the best performers at Summer Jam that year. While Njs4ever.com has been holding back on sharing some of these memories, over the next several weeks, we will be opening the vaults and sharing these memories. Especially since NJS4E will be getting into the concert business before 2009 is over. So in the meantime, check out these wonderful performances, including this one - featuring Hi-Five, and the late, angel-voiced lead singer Tony Thompson performing their biggest hit, "I Like The Way (The Kissing Game)."

We hope you enjoy. Leave a comment!

The-Dream
April
3, 2009

Giving R&B a newfound identity, The-Dream has become one of music’s most sought after songwriters and producers. With a stream of hit songs under his belt, The-Dream has worked with a diverse range of artists such as Beyonce, Madonna, Rihanna, Sting and LL Cool J – to name a few.

Penning huge hits like Rihanna’s infectious Umbrella and Beyonce’s anthem Single Ladies, The-Dream is carving his own mark within the music industry. With his second solo project, Love vs. Money, making its debut at the top of the R&B charts, Dream has joined forces with his production partner Tricky – creating melodies reminiscent to the new jack swing sound. The dynamic duo are set to recapture the magic with Dream’s solo efforts as both singles Rockin' That Thang and My Love (featuring Mariah Carey) can be heard on heavy rotation throughout the nation.

Nevertheless, The-Dream will not be slowing down as he will be working with Mariah Carey on her next album and is set to introduce his new girl group, Electrik Red in the coming months.

Jill Scott On HBO Now!
April 2, 2009

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is more than a series; it is truly a dramatically humbling experience. HBO's adaptation of British author Alexander McCall Smith's novel series spanning over a decade (1998-2009) challenges the collective conscience of a people, nation, country, and world. Showing us, no matter where we are, there is still good among us and everywhere we look there is a reason worth fighting for it.

Shot on location in Botswana by the late director Anthony Minghella (director of Cold Mountain and the Oscar winning The English Patient )-thousands of miles away from the western world we see but a reflection of ourselves in the locals of Gaborone (capital of Botswana). Through them we are shown every perspective of man's perpetual struggle with good and evil and a woman's struggle to find her place in it all, against all odds. This captivating interpretation of life serves as an extraordinary cast of ordinary people.

Anthony Minghella searched three continents to find Mma Precious Ramotswe, the novel's main character and star of the new HBO series before casting three-time Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Jill Scott. The first episode aired Sunday night (8pm eastern) and gave us our beloved songstress as we have never seen her before. Precious, a young woman raised in a small village in Botswana has big dreams. After an abusive marriage that resulted in the death of her child and the subsequent death of her father, she must stand-alone. Driven by the love of her people, her country, she sets out on a journey to Gaborone to fulfill her life long dream-to start the first all female detective agency of Botswana.

A long the way she is joined by Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni played by Lucian Msumati (Hotel Rwanda)--a recently widowed mechanic and proprietor of Tlekwong Road Speedy Motors. Mma Grace Makutsi played by Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls)-- Mma Ramotswe's eager secretary and assistant. BK played by Desmond Dube (Hotel Rwanda)--the flamboyant hairdresser at The Last Chance Salon and Mma Ramotswe's neighbor in Kgale Hill Shopping Center on the outskirts of Gaborone where The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is located. Together, they make a great balance in the extremities of life and the mysteries they uncover, no matter how big or small, keep them one step closer to the greater good they are all searching for.

Never before has there been a more beautiful portrayal of real life and real issues and real people whose flaws reveal the sometimes tragic but most beautiful part of human existence, the soul.

Along with the late Anthony Minghella, the pilot was co-written Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral and HBO's award winning The Girl In The Café) and produced by the late Sydney Pollack (Oscar winning director of Out of Africa and Tootsie, Timothy Bricknell (Cold Mountain) and Amy J. Moore.

A new episode airs next Sunday and every Sunday at 8pm eastern, 9pm central on HBO.

Hakim (formerly of the Boys) and New Kids On The Block
April 1st 2009

Ever since The Boys seemed to dissappear off of the face of the Earth after their final album for Motown (The Saga Continues, 1992), there has been an air of mystery surrounding their whereabouts, and what they have been up to. As of late, Hakim has resurfaced as a producer. While we are planning to do a more in-depth story on Hakim and the rest of his brothers, for now, we are sharing a video he has posted demonstrating how he created the music that brought the New Kids On The Block back together in the fall of 2007. In other words, this is how Hakim put together the music for "Click, Click, Click."

New "Jill" Swing alums hit Chicago Street Festival in August
March 20th, 2009

Northhalsted Market Days, a weekend fair that takes place in the "Boystown" neighborhood of Chicago known for being a hub of the city's GBLT community has confirmed that both En Vogue and Jody Watley are scheduled to perform at this year's event. Jody Watley, best known among New Jack Swing and pop music fans for her work with Shalamar, followed by her Grammy-winning debut and 1989's Larger Than Life album, has since become an icon in the house/dance community. En Vogue's presence is most likely welcome due to their glamorous image, in line with the "diva" archetype (think: Tina Turner, Cher, Chaka Khan) that has proven so important (and empowering) to men in the GLBT community.

In any event, this is an interesting development - and a great chance for fans of both acts to see them together on the same weekend! Special thanks to Ducky for the  story tip! You can RSVP for the event on Facebook here

UBERJAM lands in Chicago yet again!
March 20th, 2009

UBERJAM, which is the U.S. answer to NJS4E's parties in London and Amsterdam (but NJS4E-affiliated) takes place at the Crocodile Lounge tomorrow night (Saturday, 3/21) located at 1540 N. Milwaukee, in the Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, IL. As always, there is no cover, and there are drink specials to be had. Be sure to get there before 11:30pm or you may end up standing outside until there's room to head in. Also be sure to bring your dancing shoes, as even the most anti-dancing party people find themselves jumping if they hear Kris Kross, or giving in to that attractive guy or girl who beckons them to the dance floor. It's all about fun at UBERJAM, playing the best mix of New Jack Swing (but of course), Golden Age Hip-Hop, House, and Chicago classics. Now that NJS4E's Andrew Knyte has relocated to New York City, there is a chance that UBERJAM will launch in New York this summer! Stay tuned....

To get you warmed up for the party, check out the latest UBERJAM mash-up, furnished by DJ Trew - it combines Jim Jones' "Pop Champagne" and Soul II Soul's "Back II Life" and it is called "Pop Champagne For Life!"

If you are on Facebook, you can RSVP here

Last but not least, be sure to visit www.uberjamchicago.com for all the latest on UBERJAM.

Bobby Brown: "GOLD" double CD for release March 31
March 17th, 2009

Geffen Records will be releasing the most extensive Bobby Brown greatest hits CD yet - a double CD box set entitled GOLD. And a surprise awaiting readers of Njs4ever.com is that not only is the site's Godfather Barry Michael Cooper featured in the album liner notes written by journalist Michael A. Gonzalez, but this site's very own Andrew Knyte is also featured in the album liner notes as well, of course on behalf of Njs4ever.com.

The album's tracklisting will be released soon, but at this point it can be considered encouraging that Geffen Records saw fit to embrace New Jack Swing so strongly in 2009. The revival continues!

Dallas Austin launches Rowdy TV online
March 13th, 2009

Dallas Austin, a writer and producer who got his major scale start during the New Jack Era working with Joyce "Fenderlla" Irby (of '80s girl group Klymaxx) on Troop's Attitude album before producing hits for Another Bad Creation, TLC, Boyz II Men, and later Madonna, Michael Jackson, Gwen Stefani, and Monica, launches his latest venture, www.Rowdy.tv.

Rowdy TV, like Teddy Riley's www.b-aa-d.com is a multimedia website that allows emerging artists to share their music and network with other music lovers around the world. The user-interface of Rowdy is pretty impressive and certainly engaging, and should definitely warrant further exploration for anyone who is curious about the Rowdy approach to music, which seems to be about being edgy, creative, and expressive without regard to convention and out-moded genre boundaries.

For more information on Dallas Austin, you are invited to check out the first segment of NJS4E's Special Feature on him below:

Sunday Night Slow Jams Live - Concert Recap
March 5th, 2009

Sunday Night Slow Jams, a late night radio show, helmed by radio personality R-Dub has been serenading the southwest of the United States since 1994, rising to "major league" status in 1998 in Tuscon, Arizona before finding a permanent home on the city's Hot 98.3 FM, where it still airs to this day, in addition to over 40 different stations in 3 countries.

However, beginning in 1999, Sunday Night Slow Jams started throwing concerts, and this past February 21st and 22nd, Tuscon was rocked on back to back evenings at the 9,000-seat Tucscon Convention Center Arena. In all, ten acts performed: Ginuwine, Case, Bell Biv Devoe, Frankie J, Slim (112), Jagged Edge, Bobby Valentino, Pleasure P., MC Magic, and Amanda Perez.

Njs4ever.com has had a relationship with SlowJams.com over the years, and would like to salute that organization for a job well done. Their support of Al B. Sure! at last year's concert was commendable, and Njs4ever's CHiLL-FM carried Sunday Night Slow Jams last year, with the possibility of its return this year as well.

"New Jack" Celebrity Apprentice, En Vogue returns
March 2nd, 2008

Beginning on March 1st, the second season of Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice debuted, and it is interesting to note that one certifiable New Jack Swing alum and another R&B artist are among this seasons contenders. The certifiable person is none other than Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, best known by the general public as the raspy-voiced vocalist from R&B group TLC. With hits such as "Waterfalls" (their biggest, from the spring of 1995), but also including "Creep," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," "No Scrubs" and "Baby, Baby, Baby," TLC dominated the pop and R&B charts with their first two albums, Ooooohh on the TLC Tip!  (1992) and CrazySexyCool (1994), before finishing out their run with 1999's FanMail and 2002's 3D.

The other contender is Brian McKnight, who emerged with his debut album in 1992, and entered the spotlight with the ballad "One Last Cry," before establishing himself throughout the '90s as a go-to-guy for some of the smoothest R&B ever created. Other hits McKnight is best known for include "Back At One," "Love Is" (featuring Vanessa Williams), and "Anytime."

In the United States, you can catch Celebrity Apprentice on Sundays 9pm/8pm central on NBC.

In other news, New "Jill" Swing quartet En Vogue has announced at least three upcoming shows this year, according to entertainment outlet Ticketmaster. For those who may need a refresher (or introduction), En Vogue emerged on the scene in the spring of 1990 with "Hold On," their debut single and easily one of their biggest hits. The original line-up (Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones and Terry Ellis) continued to enjoy substantial success with three more singles off of their debut album before returing in the fall of '91 with "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and fully crossing over to "mainstream" audiences with their Funky Divas album.

A remake of "Giving Him Something (He Can Feel)" as well as the songs "Free Your Mind," and their background vocals on Salt N Pepa's "Whatta Man" solidified the group as a bonafide force in the record industry, but by 1995 member Terry Ellis embarked on a solo effort, followed by Dawn Robinson's departure from the group in 1996, leaving the group as a trio for 1997's EV3, ending En Vogue's first run with the original quartet.

Now that the group has reunited, and based on the promotional photo that was released of the quartet in 2008, it looks like the magic has returned. It will be interesting to see how the shows pan out. Be sure to check out our Events Calendar to stay up on their concert schedule this year!

N.E. Heartbreak: Is This The End?
February 23rd, 2009

New Edition - the legendary R&B supergroup founded in 1978, had Madonna open for them in the early 80s, and spawned successful careers for every member (Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Bell Biv Devoe) has certainly seen its shares of ups and downs. Circa 1986, Bobby Brown split from the group - by some accounts he was voted out. By other accounts he left voluntarily. Either way, the split happened.

Now in 2009, member Ricky Bell has gone on record with urban media outlet Rolling Out to express his dissapointment and dismay at the status of New Edition. September 10th, 2008 was the 25th anniversary of New Edition's release of Candy Girl, their debut album. But instead of reuniting and celebrating this fact, Brown, Trevsvant and Gill formed a new trio entitled Heads Of State and embarked on "The Summit Tour." Which then left the remaining members BBD to hit the studio and make new music. And from the way Ricky tells it, this was not the way things were supposed to go down.

Admittedly, we had heard the group had indeed broken up in January, but at that point the information was considered "rumor" - and the details behind where the differences were coming from were admittedly unexpected. Let's hope New Edition patches things up soon.

In the meantime, we have caught wind that another breakup may be rocking the world of R&B - and this breakup is especially surprising considering it looked like things were finally looking up for the possibility of a new record by this favorite group from the '90s.  When we are able to share, we will.

UBERJAM & Bell Biv DeVoe
February 13th, 2009

So, the headline of this article could be misleading. No, Bell Biv Devoe will not be at Chicago's next UBERJAM party - but never say never. We're reporting on two stories that members of the New Jack Nation can chew on. And we're gonna start with Chicago's monthly UBERJAM parties, which have had a new jack spin to them since July 2008. For those who aren't familiar, UBERJAM is an NJS4E-affiliated party, but "Wicker Park" Chicago-style - that is, New Jack Swing, mixed in with house music, hip-hop classics, and Chicago favorites like Crucial Conflict. If an NJS4E party is Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation album - clean, crisp, and strictly New Jack, an UBERJAM party is Janet Jackson's janet. album - earthy, sensual, funky, and eclectic. And they are both "fly." You can tell from the picture, right? Stay up on all things UBERJAM three ways: you can visit our official website at www.uberjamchicago.com, join our Facebook group, and RSVP for this month's party next Saturday, February 21st at The Crocodile Lounge, 1540 N Milwaukee on Facebook, or Going.com.

Well, we promised some BBD news, and here it is: they have two new singles available on Itunes. Look for either "Welcome To My Heart" or "You." If you've heard the songs, let us know what you think!

Ryan Leslie: How It Was Supposed To Be
February 11th, 2009

Ryan Leslie, the Harvard-educated, Bad Boy-affiliated record producer who first made his mark on the music scene with productions that dropped in 2003, is finally out six years later with his debut album. Leslie has had a lot of starts and stops leading up to this point, but it seems that his hustle may finally be paying off in a major way with this new album, which very well may be a seminal work of music in this new "era" that we seemed to have entered since late 2008. Is this hype? We don't think so.

Since 2003, Njs4ever.com has been endorsing Ryan Leslie as an artist to watch out for, ever since we heard his demo version of the song "Hot 2 Nite" which was eventually recorded and released by New Edition for their One Love album. As much as it might make some people cringe - Leslie's version was arguably the superior one.

Leslie continued to grind in the ensuing years - his debut album was supposed to launch on Tommy Mottola's Casablanca label, but neither the label or Leslie's album would ever see the light of day. But Leslie soldiered on, buidling up his dedicated web-based following, taking a very inclusive approach to his world, inviting his audience in to take a peek at what he might be working on at any given time.

It looked like Ryan Leslie would finally breakthrough the underground around 2006 when his artist, Cassie broke through in a major way with "Me & U," but alas it would be yet another year (late 2007) before Leslie would release "Diamond Girl." Despite the songs utter catchiness, it still failed to catch on beyond those clued in to his work. The video for "Diamond Girl" was released in 2008, but it seems 2009 will be Ryan's year. And let's be clear: this is definitely a modern approach to the New Jack mindset - aspirational, intelligent, sophisticated...unthuggish.

Recommended tracks on the album are:

Gibberish - this ballad has a very strong pop melody, mixes real lyrics with "gibberish," and just needs to be heard to be understood.

Irina - another ballad, that is earnest in its delivery

You're Fly - has a vintage soul sound to it...think Musiq. Will likely be a single.

Quicksand - this song seems to pay homage to the Neptunes sound. It's a great sound and we're glad to hear it again.

Valentine - a determined, focused and heartfelt ballad, with a Prince-like falsetto feel on the verses.

(preview the whole album right now at Amazon MP3!)
Or you can listen to the entire album before buying the MP3s at Ryan Leslie's Myspace page.

NJS4E Events: London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, New York
February 9th, 2009
(Editor's Note: Construction of the "new" version of NJS4E is still in progress)

First off, it seems the city that was the original namesake of New Jack Swing's birthplace (New York) is representing once again. In Amsterdam this coming Thursday, Hip-Hop/Soul's legendary quartet Jodeci will grace the stage at Heineken Music Hall, along with another R&B heavyweight Joe. NJS4E will be in the house thanks to our very own Joe Decidal, along with our Netherlands connections DJ Freez' (easily one of our brightest and leading lights at our forum) and Elmer J. For those who are new to both acts, or need a reminder, Jodeci is perhaps best known in the United States for their hit "Lately," which was a cover of a Stevie Wonder classic they performed in the summer of 1992. Jodeci is also known for their hits "Stay," "Forever My Lady," "Come & Talk To Me," and "Feenin'." For the more pop-oriented readers, this is also the group that spun off two of its members who went on to form K-Ci & JoJo.

"I Wanna Know" is easily Joe's biggest hit, but he has also laced the charts with "Stutter," "All The Things (Your Man Won't Do)" and "Don't Wanna Be A Player."

After this line-up hits Amsterdam, Jodeci and Joe will be hitting London on Saturday February 14th at Wembley Arena. Stay tuned for our coverage of both the London and Amsterdam events, which could include interviews with members of Jodeci, pictures and more!

Next up this coming Saturday in the city of Tokyo, Japan is a Teddy Riley tribute event entitled "Return Of The Legend" taking place at Odeon, which may feature an appearance by Teddy Riley himself, since he may be in Japan at that time. The event is being produced by NJS4E's newest connection, Keisuke - who runs the most comprehensive Teddy Riley website on the planet. Incidentally, Keisuke is also a musician himself and will be  on talkbox and keyboards while his bandmate Kane will be on vocals. Let us welcome the land of the Rising Sun to the NJS4E collective!

Heading back to the United States is a concert in New York featuring Chubb Rock, Christopher Williams, Jeff Redd, and Johnny Kemp at York College Performing Arts Center this coming Saturday at 8pm. This should be a hot show, and it will be great to see all four acts on one stage, with Chubb Rock also serving as the host of the evening.

Is it us or are things really starting to take shape? Let's not forget the monthly UBERJAM parties in Chicago. More news on that event coming soon - www.uberjamchicago.com

And, don't forget that you can get advance tickets to the Jeff Redd/Johnny Kemp show at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar later this month by using Paypal - send $12 to rsvp[at]njs4ever.net and you can save up to $8 per ticket! You can make a dinner out of it too - check out the Sugar bar menu at www.sugarbarnyc.com

It's New Jack Swing Forever, baby.

Johnny Kemp/Jeff Redd show in NYC: 2/28/09
February 6th, 2009

(Editor's Note: Construction of the "new" version of NJS4E is still in progress, but the following sections are currently "ready for Primetime" - Hall of Fame, The Time Machine, Special Features, Music Videos, History of NJS Era. In addtion, site currently looks best in FireFox and Google Chrome - currently being optimized for Internet Explorer).

Njs4ever is proud to announce that in a night of New Jack Swing, Johnny Kemp and Jeff Redd will perform at celebrity-frequented Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar on the night of February 28th. And Njs4ever is also happy to report that we have been invited to give a discount to all of our readers in the New York/Tri-state area who want to be down with the show. Tickets are expected to be in the neighborhood of $20, but if you buy them in advance with us, you only have to pay $12 to get in, and see two of New York's finest NJS performers.

For those who may need a reminder or simply are learning for the first time, Johnny Kemp is best known for his hit, "Just Got Paid," which has lasted so long as a party single, that Justin Timberlake and his bandmates in *Nsync covered the song on for their No Strings Attached album, the LP that maintains the record of most copies sold in the first week (2.4 million). Jeff Redd is best known for perhaps two hits circa 1990 and 1991. The first of which is "I Found Lovin," a cover of the original track by funk band Fatback. The second hit is from the soundtrack of the 1991 Uptown produced film, Strictly Business starring Halle Berry - and that song is called "You Called And Told Me." Jeff also scored a third hit between these two singles which was a ballad entitled "Love High," and was the man responsible for bringing Mary J. Blige to Uptown Records (essentially this was her big break). Finally, Jeff Redd was the MCA Records executive behind all three albums by K-Ci & JoJo.

Here are the show details:

What: Johnny Kemp & Jeff Redd
Where: Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar
Address: 254 W 72nd St, New York City
Date: Saturday, February 28
Time: Doors open at 8pm
Presale Tix w/NJS4E: $12

Note: Presale ticket sales end Friday evening at 5pm 2/27 - NO EXCEPTIONS
Once purchased, your name will be at will-call @ the venue

Happy 40th Birthday to Bobby Brown!
February 5th, 2009

(Editor's Note: Construction of the "new" version of NJS4E is still in progress as of 2/5, but the following sections are currently "ready for Primetime" - Hall of Fame, The Time Machine, Special Features, Music Videos, History of NJS Era. In addtion, site currently looks best in FireFox and Google Chrome - currently being optimized for Internet Explorer).

It's hard to believe, but then again, when you consider the fact that Bobby's smash single "On Our Own" from the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack dominated the charts in 1989, then you realize that was 20 years ago.

Robert Barisford Brown, better known to the world as Bobby Brown is indeed officially 40 years old. Currently Mr. Brown is on tour with fellow New Edition bandmates Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill as the group Heads Of State on their Summit Tour, which began late last year.

NJS4E was able to catch up with Bobby Brown about a year ago when he and Johnny stopped in Chicago with Boyz II Men. In person, and on camera, Bobby was nothing like how he has come to be known in the media - as a bad boy. He was laid back, genial, and extremely passionate about his love for music in general. And the comraderie between he and Johnny was real - and like he says in the interview, the N.E. crew really do share a brotherly bond...disagreements and all.

Happy Birthday Bobby!

Bell Biv DeVoe: Reactivated?
February 4th, 2009

(Editor's Note: Construction of the "new" version of NJS4E is still in progress as of 2/4, but the following sections are currently "ready for Primetime" - Hall of Fame, The Time Machine, Special Features, Music Videos, History of NJS Era.)

On January 30th, Michael Bivins alerted all of his friends on Facebook that a new BBD Fan Page had just been launched. Within hours, there were nearly 100 fans and the count seems to be growing unabated.

Then, on the very same day, it was reported that a new BBD song has been leaked to the internet entitled "Welcome To My Heart." However, there seems to be disagreement among listeners as to whether or not this really is Bell Biv DeVoe or some sort of hoax. How about you take a listen below and let us know what you think?

Lastly, BBD has also just launched their official
MySpace page - check it out!

Is BBD back? Are the rumors that New Edition have indeed broken up yet again also true? Is their beef? The answers are inconclusive at this time - as is the identity of the performers on this track....

Again, post your opinions here: is this BBD or not? And...do you like it?

NJS4EVER 4.0 is finally here...
February 2nd, 2009

(Editor's Note: Construction of the "new" version of NJS4E is still in progress as of 2/2, but we're not holding things up any longer - the following sections are currently "ready for Primetime" - Hall of Fame, The Time Machine, Special Features, Music Videos, History of NJS Era)

...and it has been a long time coming. On February 13th, 2009, Njs4ever.com will be seven years old. The launch of the 4th version of a website that began as an extremely humble Angelfire site back in February 2002, originally conceived in late 2001. In the seven years since Njs4ever has existed, it has grown organically, being recognized by fans of the music worldwide, then the songwriters, producers, and artists who made the New Jack Swing genre possible, by Time Life Music, then by the man who coined the term New Jack Swing, and even VH1, who dubbed us the Official New Jack Swing Website and nominated us for Best Honoree Website at the 2007 VH1 Hip Hop Honors.

Now it is 2009 we stand poised to become the platform for a new era of positive-minded rhythmic music - a lot like the way The Arsenio Hall Show served as the platform for a new America between the years of 1989 and 1994. It seems almost unreal to think that artists such as Troop, New Edition, Guy, Pebbles, Babyface, Janet Jackson, Levert, Kool Moe Dee, Heavy Dee, Tone Loc, Young MC, MC Hammer, Salt N Pepa, 2Pac, Prince, A Tribe Called Quest, Chuckii Booker, and so, so many more would regularly appear on the Arsenio Hall Show like it was no big deal. It was a VERY special time in America during this period - when the sociological climate seemed to be moving forward, not backwards. And despite our economic woes in today's times, it seems like things are moving forward once again. Amen.

A lot of passion, time,  patience, sacrifice and love has gone into making Njs4ever.com what is has been, what it is now, and what it will be in the years to come.

The signs are already there - with the election of President Barack Obama into the White House, it seems that a new, Cosby-esque presence has once again emerged front and center into America's consciousness. Except this time around, it's not a fantasy - it's real. And the message of hope, upward mobility, and unity - "the way things ought to be" as Bill Cosby described his show, no longer has to be "trojan-horsed" into a sitcom comedy...it's real. And not only does Obama's influence stretch across America, but the significance of his achievement and current standing is global. Now that the stage is set, perhaps the music industry will respond in kind, shedding the more banal strains of urban culture such as gangsta rap, and once again embracing music that inspires, and celebrates the pursuit of happiness.

In 2009, we're leading the way with three new radio properties, with two of them being aggressively marketed for rapid growth. CHiLL-FM, "The Beat Of A Generation" is the first official offering by Njs4ever Radio Networks (NRN), and it is a mix of New Jack Swing, Golden Age Hip Hop, Freestyle, and straight ahead dance pop, along with new music that fits the format by artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Keys.

The second is CrushRadio, "#1 For Music and Fun," which is a "retro" '90s Top 40 format, which is an unabashed take on music that is fun. New websites for both stations are coming within the next 6-8 weeks. The third station is a nod to Njs4ever's core audience worldwide - those who helped us get to where we are in the first place through their support of our NJS4E Parties held globally several times a year. And that station is New Jack Radio - which began this summer, evolved into CHiLL-FM, and now has returned as a standalone. Stay tuned for more news on New Jack Radio.

On a personal note however, we would like to thank several individuals who in one way or another helped Njs4ever get to where it is, and where it will be going. This list will be chronological - that way, it will help us make sure we remember who to thank and minimize the chances of our forgetting anyone. Here we go:

2001: The creators of the websites The New Style (Jam & Lewis), Ken12 (New Edition fansite) and Lindsey Nothstine (New Edition fansite) for helping to inspire the creation of Njs4ever.com - your sites were the most comprehensive of their time.

2002: To the late Ms. Olivia Akabutu, for being incredibly supportive of the Njs4ever endeavor, in the way only a mother could.

2003: To Randy O'Kelly of Time Life Music for recognizing Njs4ever.com, Bernard Belle for granting us our first interview, Eleonora Cutaia for designing NJS4E 2.0., and the visitors from all over the world who sent their love via e-mail supporting the site. Also to Lorenzo "Cutmasta LC" Caldwell of WMOC Radio for providing the soundtrack and lending his support to the site as well. And Will Leon of the former Ne20.com.

2004: To the NJS4E forum squad - notably Steven "Stevieswing" Anderson, Mello75, Dan P, Nathan "DJ Freez'" Veenstra, K-Bee, RuffMix, NewJackKid, MusicDaughter, and the rest of "The Usual Suspects." A house was built for New Jack enthusiasts, and you made it a home. Also to Keith "ZappMan" Crenshaw for entering the picture, and Aaron Hall for granting us our first video interview. Special thanks to Chris Boothe for the professional boost.

2005: To Vijay "Jodecidal" Chandegra for irreversibly entering the picture and throwing the first NJS4E party in London on August 13th, 2005, and meeting us in Los Angeles for the Guy/BBD/Blackstreet/Johnny Gill concert. To Teddy Riley for dinner later that night. To Zeyl10 for his support of New Jack Swing in Chicago. And to everyone who helped with the construction of Njs4e 3.0.

2006: To Divazz Entertainment (especially Miss Soulful) for their support of NJS4E with the Amsterdam Worldwide Meet-Up. To Ari S. for his support. To "rising star" Jarrell Mason for his tireless efforts with The Time Machine radio show and artist interviews. To Jeff Redd  for his friendship and support shown to Njs4ever, and finally to Barry Michael Cooper for graciously blessing Njs4ever, and for granting us an interview.

2007:
To VH1, Nelson George, Nicole Nelch, Scott Melker, Danyel Smith (VIBE), Andre Harell, and Aqil Davidson for showing us love before, during and after the VH1 Hip Hop Honors weekend. To Paul Moriarity for believing in it right away. To Shand in London, and the rest of the UK New Jackers - no one does it the way you do! Special thanks To Johnny Kemp and DJ Kev Ski for their crucial roles at our 20th Anniversary of NJS party in New York City. To Ike Lee III.

2008: To Bobby Brown, Shawn Stockman, Johnny Gill and North American Entertainment Group for keeping New Jack Swing alive through concerts and allowing NJS4E to cover their Chicago stop. To Steven "StevieSwing" Mills  for joining the fold and making New Jack Radio, CHiLL-FM and CrushRadio possible. To R-Dub for his support. To the CHiLL-FM airstaff especially CP Time, PJ Butta, Booker, The K.O.R.T. Boys, John Cruz and Nia B. To Joel Denver at AllAccess.com. To TwistMusikMedia.com for constructing this website. To DJ Trew and The ComeUps for making UBERJAM Chicago possible. To Matt Johnston. And of couse to the "riders" still with us: Vijay "Joe Decidal" Chandegra, Jarrell Mason, DJ Freez', the DJs and regulars at our parties (Gee, Van Damme, The Wolf Pack, Elmer J) at our and the newcomers who will be felt in 2009.

If anyone was forgotten, charge it to our heads, and not to our hearts.  As you can see, Njs4ever Networks is not a "fly-by-night" operation. This is a "lightning rod" for Generation X - the rhythmic, new jack-centric portion of Generation X. We will be delivering news, covering events, posting interviews, and more in the months to come. It's a new dawn...it's a new day. And Njs4ever.com is here to stay.

Are you ready?
